Why should I secure walkways?

Walkways are often areas, which must stand a heavy human traffic many hours a day since a walkway combines two or more locations.

Walkways are common in many different branches, like public areas, parks, meadows and buildings, within the process industry and plants, oil, gas and wind locations on marine vessels etc. The surfaces on walkways are often concrete, grating, checker plates, wood etc. All of these materials have one essential thing in common: they are very slippery to walk on when they are wet.

It is therefore very important to avoid slips, trips and falls in these areas.

Concrete decks

A slippery concrete floor can be secured effectively by mounting a 3 mm thick fibreglass walkway cover on it which is embedded with hardwearing silica carbide stone fragments. We recommend that the walkway profiles be mounted with countersunk screws. An adhesive mounting paste works very well as a sound membrane if necessary.

The profiles are available in all colours and can be cut to order.

Alternatively, a concrete deck is made slip resistant simply by using a rubber mat with an asphalt-like surface. This anti-slip solution is optimal for temporary issues or if an ergonomic effect is desired.

Checker plate

A steel plate with a pattern seldom offers an effective anti-slip function. Especially when wet, these plates get quite slippery. This is why checker plates are effectively secured by mounting walkway covers on them. We recommend an adhesive paste for mounting on checker plate – this will also absorb noise.

To create a pedestrian area some choose to place the anti-slip profiles in a pattern that imitates pedestrian crossings. When doing this we recommend that the profiles have a maximum distance of 20 cm from each other. This way there is always friction under every footstep.

Metal gratings or perforated steel plates

There are many types of anti-slip steel gratings and anti-slip steel plates on the market. What they have in common is that after a short time of use they wear round and become less slip resistant. Furthermore, these surfaces become slippery when wet anyway.

We recommend our FRP grating, with permanent anti-slip embedded stones or alternatively our flat profiles to lay on top of the grating or the plate in question. As for the stairs and step covers, the flat profiles are mounted with our special clip, which is tightened up against the grate from underneath with a countersunk bolt from the top.

Prevent falls with walkway covers

As mentioned before, walkways can become very slippery when wet and that can cause accidents. Fortunately, Real Safety has a wide variety of anti-slip solutions for all types of surfaces which are quick and easy to mount when the above instructions are followed.

Also, there are many different colours and grip grades with or without text/pictograms to choose from. What's more, we also gladly cut sheets to your desired size. Real Safety can advise and supply for new projects or advise you how to upgrade what is already installed. Check out our various anti-slip solutions for walkways below.
